Abstract
Wireless sensor network (WSN) applications rely on multiple sensor feedback for interaction with the environment. The objectives of the data link layer in this interaction are multiplexing/demultiplexing of data, data frame detection, medium access, and error control. This chapter explains the effects of error control on communication reliability and efficiency in WSNs. It describes four main approaches of the error control mechanisms in WSNs: power control, automatic repeat request (ARQ), forward error correction (FEC), and hybrid ARQ (HARQ). The overall comparison of error control schemes requires a cross-layer analysis to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of these schemes. The chapter presents such an analysis model and describes the cases where FEC or HARQ is more efficient than ARQ.
