Abstract Uelzen lock with pumping station The Uelzen I lock near Esterholz at the Elbe Lateral Canal between Hamburg and Berlin is one of the highest lock buildings in Europe with a rise of 23 m. The lock is about 185 m long and 12 m wide, it began operating in 1976. Currently under construction is a second lock in addition to the existing building (see 64 pp).
