Abstract
Abstract In this paper, a novel uniplanar compact EBG structure—a dumbbell structure—is used in the design of a 2 × 2 microstrip antenna array, which has a resonant frequency of 5.6 GHz. Due to the suppression of the surface wave introduced by the EBG structure, the E‐plane mutual coupling between the array elements is reduced, as well as the side‐lobe level in the E‐plane radiation pattern. Moreover, a 1.5‐dB increase in the gain of the main lobe is observed. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
