Abstract
Heterocyclic compounds, which represent almost\ntwo-thirds of all the known organic compounds,\ninclude some of the most significant for human\nbeings. It is not surprising, therefore, that this class\nof compounds has received special attention by chemists\nof different origin to provide selective synthetic\naccess to the enormous variety of structural features\ntypical of this class.\nThe scope of this review is to collect and analyze\nthe methods that make use of strained alkylidenecyclopropanes1\n(ACPs) 1 to produce heterocyclic\ncompounds. Doing this, we are confident of making\na useful contribution to the organic chemistry community\nbecause, despite the huge literature already\navailable on these rather sophisticated olefins, their\nemployment in the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds\nhas been only barely examined before and it\nis time to propose a comprehensive review that will\npresent the state of the art.
