Abstract
A flow chart is presented that summarizes major empirical and theoretical accomplishments that contributed to the modern view of the atom. A chronology is included to show the time dependence of the various contributions. Suggestions are made about how this chart can be used in a variety of contexts as a framework for discussing science as a process; the impact of technology on scientific accomplishments; ethics in science and society; and the historical, cultural, and social pressures that influence scientific advances.
