Abstract
We present a theory of the effect of dielectric friction on molecular reorientation. This theory is based on a rotational Smoluchowski equation with fluctuating torques due to polarization fluctuations. This theory predicts several interesting consequences of dielectric friction which should be susceptible to experimental test: In contrast to previous theories, dielectric friction is shown to have a decreased effect for higher l rotational correlation functions. The theory also leads to unusual results for molecular reorientation in polar mixtures.
