Abstract
The orbits of 18 short-period comets observed at three or more perihelion passages since 1925 have been studied in order to ascertain the significance of nongravitational forces. Fifteen of the comets were found to be definitely affected by nongravitational forces, seven of them exhibiting secular accelerations and eight secular decelerations. The sizes of the secular terms seem to be related to the physical appearance of the comets: two of the three comets the observations of which could be represented by a purely gravi- tational theory, P/Arend-Rigaux and P/Neujmin 1, are decidedly asteroidal in appearance, while the very diffuse comet P/Honda-Mrkos- ' shows a large nongravitational acceleration. Some suggestions are made concerning future studies of nongravitational forces on comets.
