Abstract
Infrared and visual observations of the bright infrared source AFGL 2636 are presented. Isophotal maps of the source region were produced at effective wavelengths of 3.6, 4.9, 10 and 19.5 microns and reveal the presence of two unresolved sources embedded in a small cool nebula. Photometric and spectrophotometric measurements of the two sources and a B supergiant which lies near them were also obtained in the infrared, along with visual spectra and UBVR photometry of the B star. Results suggest that AFGL 2636 may be a region of active star formation similar to the Theta 1 BNKL complex in the Orion nebula and embedded in an extensive region of gas and dust. The two infrared sources and the associated B supergiant are concluded to be luminous young stars which provide the ionizing flux for the G 82.6 + 0.4 H II region.
