Classical novae detected in the IRAS survey

Abstract
The authors have identified four classical novae having accurately known optical positions with counterparts in the IRAS Point Source Catalog. Two correspond to recent events observed by IRAS within one year of their respective optical maxima and are the first classical novae detected at infrared wavelengths longer than 20 μm. The infrared flux from nova Sgr 1982 varied dramatically on a 6 month time scale and had a spectral shape characteristic of hot dust near condensation temperature. The other recent nova, nova Mus 1983, showed infrared emission consistent with a free-free spectrum as opposed to dust emission. The behavior of these two objects, observed at similar phases in their respective light curves, is consistent with a previously suggested correlation between the inferrred mass of heated dust and luminosity/speed class, such that faster novae appear to have less dust than slower novae. The older novae FH Ser (1970) and HR Del (1967) were also detected by IRAS. The emission from FH Ser could arise from hot dust, but the data on HR Del are inconsistent with a thermal spectrum.
