Photoelectric photometry of AS Camelopardalis - an eclipsing binary with a discrepant rate of apsidal motion

Abstract
The eccentric 3.43-day eclipsing binary AS Cam was observed photoelectrically during 1987 and 1988. Accurate determinations of the times of primary and secondary eclipses were obtained from the observations. The longitude of the periastron omega of the orbit of the binary system was determined to be omega = 238.15 + or - 0.10 deg for the epoch of 1988.8. This longitude of periastron is close to the value expected from the previous studies in which the rate of apsidal motion was found to be omega of about 15.0 deg/100 yr. This observed apsidal motion is about 30 deg/100 yr smaller than expected from the combined general-relativistic and classical effects of omega of 44 deg/100 yr. The cause of the observed large discrepancy between observations and theory remains an unsolved problem.
