Partition Functions in Ionizing Plasmas
The Astrophysical Journal1971Vol. 164, pp. 359–359
Abstract
Extensive calculations of partition functions and other gas characteristics have been made for plasmas of seven different chemical compositions. The analysis of these results has led to an extremely accurate expression of very few terms for the partition function of any ion. The determination of opacities and equations of state for astrophysical and laboratory plasmas depend upon accurate partition functions. It is now a relatively simple calculatinn to make. The seven cases are six pure gases (H, He, N, 0, Ne, Ar) and a solar composition of sixteen elements. The calculations cover an electron-pressure range of 10-0 to 10 dyn cm and a temperature range of 3000 -150000 K.
