A review of distance indicators: zero points and errors of primary indicators. de Vaucouleurs, G. Abstract The main primary, secondary, and tertiary extragalactic distance indicators are discussed. The basic calibrations of the primary indicators are reviewed, their zero points are revised where appropriate, and realistic estimates of their systematic and random errors are provided. The objects considered include novae, Cepheids, RR Lyrae variables and horizontal-branch stars, AB supergiants, and eclipsing binaries. Various techniques for determining the zero point of each class of objects are examined, and the reliability of each technique is evaluated. The adopted zero points of the primary indicators are compared along with the uncertainties and observational dispersion of the zero points. Appendices deal with the absolute magnitudes of Galactic novae, the distance modulus of the Hyades, the zero point of the period-luminosity relation based on the Hyades modulus, and absolute magnitudes of ab-type RR Lyrae variables.
