Emission-line profiles in low-redshift QSOs

Abstract
Observed emission-line profiles are presented for six low-redshift QSOs. The profiles are given in accurate graphical form as observed and with corrections applied to remove nearby lines. Measurements of the line widths and asymmetries are given, as well as measurements which indicate the rate of change of the H-beta/H-alpha ratio with velocity. When combined with earlier work on Seyfert 1 galaxies, some differences are noted between the QSOs and the Seyfert galaxies. In the QSOs, the profile differences between H-beta and H-alpha, and He I and H-alpha, appear to be less pronounced than in the Seyfert galaxies. In addition, the QSOs may have broad line widths that are relatively constant compared with the Seyfert galaxies, and they may on the average have broader forbidden lines. In 3C 273, forbidden O III 4959, 5007 A are present with full widths at half-maximum of about 1700 km/s.
