Small-scale structure and chemical differentiation in the central region of the Sagittarius B2 molecular cloud

Abstract
The authors have carried out observations with 15arcsec angular resolution of a number of molecular species in the central 2arcmin region of the Sgr B2 molecular cloud. Simultaneous observations of HNCO and vibrationally excited HC3N, which are sensitive probes of the infrared radiation field, and SO, OCS, and ground state HC3N, which are thought to be collisionally excited and thus probes of density, have been made over the central 5 pc region of the cloud, including Sgr B2 middle and north sources. The difference between the spatial distributions of the various species studied does not appear to be explainable in terms of excitation or radiative transfer effects and thus must be attributed to variation in the chemical abundances of the various clumps. The evidence provided by the present data for the presence of hot gas and dust around Sgr B2 (N) further heightens the apparent contradiction presented by the lack of infrared emission from this source.
