Abstract
The broad component of the H emission from NGC 5548 is in excellent agreement with a profile calculated from a new model for the source of this radiation. In the model, protons are ejected with energy greater than 200 keV from a small source and subsequently stream outward through uniformly dense, partially ionized hydrogen gas. The broad Ha component arises from photons emitted from those protons that have picked up electrons during the process of slowing down to thermal energies.
