Abstract
The 1(10)-1(11) A-state transition of methyl formate HCOOCH3 has been detected in emission in the spectrum of Sgr B2. With a laboratory determination of 1610.249 MHz for the rest frequency of the transition, the radial velocity of the observed line is 53 plus or minus 6 km per sec. The nearby E-state transition at 1610.906 MHz may also have been detected. It is probable that the 1(10) and 1(11) levels are inverted and that the continuum emission of Sgr B2 is being amplified.
