Abstract
The more massive star in the detached eclipsing binary, EK Cep, is an unevolved early A star. The properties of its companion of mass 1.1 M_sun; - lower surface gravity than that of the A star, temperature lower than that of main-sequence stars of the same mass, excess radiation in the blue band - have a rational explanation if this secondary component is in a state of pre-main-sequence contraction. The object appears to be unique among stars with directly determined masses.
