Studies on Tobacco Petal Primordia in Culture: Petal Duplication Induced by Surgery
Botanical Gazette1973Vol. 134(2), pp. 154–160
Abstract
Tobacco petal primordia at four developmental stages were bisected surgically and left attached to the floral meristem either (1) as paired half-primordia, or (2) as half of the original organ rudiment only. The floral meristems were then cultured sterilely for 8 days on Linsmaier and Skoog medium. In all but the oldest stage, a "whole" new petal primordium consistently developed on the distal portion of each original half. On this basis the young petal primordium seems to be a relatively labile structure with regulative properties.
