Abstract
Although most publications dealing with lexical semantics during the last twenty-five years have recognised the role of contexts in determining the meaning of lexical units, this paper goes beyond such modest claims and takes the position that (1) there is no meaning of a lexical item apart from some context, linguistic or cultural, and (2) the relevant conceptual level consists of a focal term and the corresponding context. The paper concludes with a sample dictionary entry for run as an activity/event.
