How Risky Are Open Frontier Models?
Abstract
Abstract This chapter explores the complexities of providing access to frontier AI models. It weighs the potential benefits of open approaches, such as enhanced researcher access and transparency, against potential risks like cybersecurity threats and toxic content generation. The chapter argues that while the benefits provided by today’s open-weight models outweigh the risks, it may be difficult to forecast how the risk profile of open-weight models may change in future. It emphasizes the need to contextualize potential risks associated with open weights within the broader AI and technological landscape. Given the rapid pace of advancements in AI capabilities and commercialization, the chapter advocates for a nuanced approach to AI policy and open source. AI policy should encourage openness while proactively addressing risks through measures such as transparency requirements and safety evaluations.
