Abstract
A systematic set of measurements of pion and proton yields from pion reactions on nuclei $4\ensuremath{\le}A\ensuremath{\le}180$ has been performed for incident pions in the $\ensuremath{\Delta}(3,3)$ energy region. Detailed energy spectra for protons at many angles were obtained along with inclusive pion yields. The implications of general features of these data for the pion absorption and scattering processes are discussed.[NUCLEAR REACTIONS $^{4}\mathrm{He}$, $^{6}\mathrm{Li}$, $^{9}\mathrm{Be}$, $^{12}\mathrm{C}$, $^{27}\mathrm{Al}$, Ni, $^{181}\mathrm{Ta}$, (${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}},p$), (${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}},{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}\ensuremath{'}}$) inclusive; ${E}_{\ensuremath{\pi}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}=100,160,220$ MeV; $30\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}<~\ensuremath{\theta}<~150\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}$; $\frac{{d}^{2}\ensuremath{\sigma}}{d\ensuremath{\Omega}d{E}_{p}},{E}_{p}\ensuremath{\gtrsim}50$ MeV.]
