Analyzing power and transversity cross sections forπ+p andπ−p elastic scattering from 471 to 687 MeV/c

Abstract
We have obtained precise data on the analyzing power for ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$p and ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$p elastic scattering at 471, 547, 625, and 687 MeV/c using a transversely polarized target. Using our previously measured differential cross sections at the above beam momenta, we have determined the transversity cross sections and the bounds of the isospin triangle inequalities. Comparisons are made with the results of existing partial wave analyses by the Karlsruhe-Helsinki, Carnegie-Mellon University--LBL, and VPI groups. The ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}$ predictions are in acceptable agreement with our data, while the agreement is less acceptable for ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}}$.
