Measurement of the two-photon width of theηandη′mesons

Abstract

Formation of the $\ensuremath{\eta}$ and ${\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ mesons in two-photon interactions has been observed with the ASP detector at the SLAC ${e}^{+}{e}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ storage ring PEP ($\sqrt{s}=29$ GeV). In a data sample of 108 ${\mathrm{pb}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$, a total of $2287 \ensuremath{\eta}$ and $547 {\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ events have been detected in the $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ decay mode. The two-photon widths are determined to be ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}}(\ensuremath{\eta})=0.490\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.010\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.048$ keV and ${\ensuremath{\Gamma}}_{\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}}({\ensuremath{\eta}}^{\ensuremath{'}})=4.96\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.23\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.72$ keV. The SU(3) pseudoscalar mixing angle deduced from these values is ${\ensuremath{\theta}}_{p}=\ensuremath{-}19.8\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}2.2\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}$.
