Abstract
The NA24 experiment at CERN investigated inclusive $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}$, ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$, and $\ensuremath{\gamma}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ final states in the mass range between 4 and 9 GeV/${\mathit{c}}^{2}$ produced in ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}p$, ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{+}p$, and $\mathrm{pp}$ reactions at a c.m.-system energy $\sqrt{s}=23.7$ GeV. The ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ cross sections agree well with expectations of the quark-parton model. For $\ensuremath{\gamma}{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{0}$ production in ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}p$ and $\mathrm{pp}$ reactions, a clear signal is observed and cross sections are shown. The production of $\ensuremath{\gamma}\ensuremath{\gamma}$ events was observed with a statistical significance of $2.9\ensuremath{\sigma}$ in ${\ensuremath{\pi}}^{\ensuremath{-}}p$ reactions. The cross section is in agreement with a higher-order QCD prediction.
