Abstract
We present a new method for studying high-${p}_{T}$ dilepton events (${e}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}{e}^{\ensuremath{\mp}}$, ${\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{\mp}}$, ${e}^{\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}}{\ensuremath{\mu}}^{\ensuremath{\mp}}$) and simultaneously extracting the production cross sections of $p\overline{p}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}t\overline{t}$, $p\overline{p}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{W}^{+}{W}^{\ensuremath{-}}$, and $p\overline{p}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{Z}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\tau}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}}$ at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=1.96\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{TeV}$. We perform a likelihood fit to the dilepton data in a parameter space defined by the missing transverse energy and the number of jets in the event. Our results, which use $360\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{p}{\mathrm{b}}^{\ensuremath{-}1}$ of data recorded with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider, are $\ensuremath{\sigma}(t\overline{t})={8.5}_{\ensuremath{-}2.2}^{+2.7}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{pb}$, $\ensuremath{\sigma}({W}^{+}{W}^{\ensuremath{-}})={16.3}_{\ensuremath{-}4.4}^{+5.2}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{pb}$, and $\ensuremath{\sigma}({Z}^{0}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}{\ensuremath{\tau}}^{+}{\ensuremath{\tau}}^{\ensuremath{-}})={291}_{\ensuremath{-}46}^{+50}\text{ }\text{ }\mathrm{pb}$.
