Abstract
The quantization of pathological field theories, suffering noncausal propagation properties and the Johnson-Sudarshan effect, is investigated from both the Yang-Feldman and action-principle points of view. For a particularly simple system of this kind, the two quantization approaches are shown to be exactly equivalent. It is argued that the equivalence also holds for theories of interacting spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ fields.
