Development of a polypropylene insulation material for medium voltage AC and DC cables

Abstract

This paper measures and analyzes the key mechanical, thermal and electrical properties of several typical polypropylene (PP) insulation materials from Chinese and international companies and completes the selection of polypropylene insulation materials. Building upon this foundation, we carried out performance evaluation and selection research compared with low density polyethylene, and identified the polypropylene insulation base materials that are potentially suitable for medium-voltage AC and DC cables. Building upon this foundation, the material formula research has been completed. Subsequently, a 10 kV DC polypropylene-based insulated cable and a 35 kV AC polypropylene-based insulated cable using the same insulation material formula were produced, and type tests and electrical margins were carried out to verify the performance of the newly developed cable system.
