Microwave absorption in compressed CF4, CH4, and CF4–Ar, CH4–Ar mixtures in the 2.3 cm−1 region
Abstract
Microwave absorption is reported in gaseous CF 4 and CH 4 in the region of 2.3 cm −1 . For CF 4 , loss factor measurements are given at temperatures ranging from 248 K to 318 K and densities in the range 30 to 100 amagat. The parts in the loss factor which are proportional linearly to the density and to the square of the density are found to depend on temperature as T −0.40 ± 1.05 and T −1.98 ± 0.15 respectively. For CH 4 , loss factor measurements are given at temperatures ranging from 208 K to 295 K and at densities in the range 60 to 200 amagat. The part in the loss factor which is proportional to the square of the density is found to depend on temperature as T −1.55 ± 0.23 . The present results are compared with the extrapolated infrared results and both have been used to calculate the octopole and hexadecapole moments. Loss factor measurements are also reported in CF 4 –Ar and CH 4 –Ar gas mixtures at 295 K at various density ratios and total densities up to 200 amagat.
