Abstract
Eleven cases of postirradiation sarcoma presenting over a period of fifteen years are discussed in detail. Five occurred after treatment of primary carcinoma of the breast and 3 after megavoltage therapy. Evidence is presented that these neoplasms are causally related to the precedent irradiation and are not examples of the “double primary ” phenomenon or of spontaneously occurring osteogenic sarcoma. The frequency of postirradiation sarcoma of bone in ten-year survivors of irradiated carcinoma of the breast is estimated. The need for improved follow-up and reporting of long-term radiotherapeutic cures is emphasized.
