LED Backlighting Solutions to Achieve Wide Color Gamut in LCD TV and Monitor
Abstract
Color is the next big differentiator in the increasingly competitive consumer display market. Significant effort has been given to bring the user experience closer to reality with lifelike colors. Recent technology breakthrough in LCD display with LED backlight comes with Wide Color Gamut (WCG) that is significantly larger than what was achieved with older phosphor technology. The typical color gamut obtained by yellow phosphor con-verted white LED backlight is around 70% NTSC. With new technology developments, NTSC greater than 100% becomes possible. This improvement helps keep LCD more competitive at today’s display market against AMOLED which has much higher cost and lower manu-facturing yield, especially for large screen display. This presentation gives an overview of the latest material and LED backlighting technologies that help achieve wide color gamut in LCD TV. It includes quantum dots (QD) and special red and green phosphor converted white LED among a few new approaches. It reviews the current status and performance of these different technologies. Examples of both edge-lit and direct-lit LED backlighting employing these technologies will be presented with NTSC data and cost performance comparison.
