Diffusion of Fission Products at High Temperatures from Refractory Matrices

Abstract
Current interest in high temperature reactors has emphasized the need for measurement of fission product diffusion rates from refractory materials in the temperature region of 1500°C to 5000°C. In addition, detailed knowledge concerning diffusion rates of fission products at high temperatures permits the study of many short-lived early members of fission product chains which might otherwise be difficult or impossible to separate rapidly enough by chemical means. A problem of particular importance concerns the possible loss of delayed neutron reactivity in advanced design reactors which are meant to operate at temperatures greater than 2000°C. Other important problems concern the rate of loss of fissile material, the gross rate of loss of fission products, and the rates at which individual fission products are lost at high temperatures.
