Abstract
Using a sociological perspective, this article seeks to clarify the nature of institutional forces that perpetuate a sense of separation between research and practice. Research is viewed as a type of occupational activity that occurs within a discipline which in turn has been institutionalized within higher education. Practice is viewed as a type of occupational activity that occurs within a profession. Professions and disciplines are subsequently viewed as becoming relatively isolated from one another because of the normative nature of their organization, the nature of their core technologies, and differences in the valuing and use of knowledge relevant to art education.
