Abstract

A la fin de l'ere des Qing (1840-1911), Shanghai etait la seule ville chinoise ou l'on pouvait passer d'un style de vie traditionnel a un style de vie moderne. Durant cette periode de transition, se developpe dans l'enclave de Shangai, un modele sinise de modernisation/ocidentalisation, ou les normes sociales traditionnelles ont une importance institutionnelle minime. La ville constitue donc le lieu ideal pour les wenren (intellectuels), fascines par son energie, sa nouveaute et son confort.
