Abstract
The UCRB is defined as the drainage basin upstream of the Colorado River at Lee's Ferry, AZ (USGS streamgage 0938000), and drains an area of 108,100 square miles (mi 2 ), including portions of Wyoming, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico (fig. The basin is topographically complex and ranges in elevation from 3,100 to 14,300 feet (ft) above sea level (averages 6,800 ft). The average annual temperature ranges from 28.7 to 62.5 F (averages 45.9 F), and the average annual precipitation ranges from 5.1 to 54.9 inches (in.) (averages 14.5 in.). The western slope of the Rocky Mountains forms the eastern border of the UCRB, and much of the western boundary is bordered by the Wasatch Mountains. The large elevation and climate gradients in the UCRB contribute to a diversity of landscapes, ranging from high elevation alpine areas that receive most of their precipitation as snow, to lower, drier, and warmer areas of the Colorado Plateau. Major rivers in the UCRB include the Colorado, Green, Gunnison, San Juan, White, and Yampa Rivers. Much of the surface-water flow in the UCRB is regulated, including the presence of large
