A Canadian computer controlled, permanent magnet and Hall-sensors equipped EM wire-rope tester
Abstract
In response to requests by both the Canadian mining industry and the mine regulatory authorities, CANMET's MRL (i.e., Canada Centre for Mineral and Energy Technology's Mining Research Laboratories) undertook a project in 1986 to comparatively evaluate, on a carefully controlled experimental basis, the performance of a range of Canadian, American, and German electro-magnetic (EM) wire-rope test instruments. Test results, and a complete list of previous CANMET reports, were presented in a paper at the Royal School of Mines, London, UK, in June 1993 (reference 1). In the following paper the authors discuss their most recent work, undertaken as a direct consequence of the specific conclusions drawn from their 1986-1992 project results. In particular they describe the development of the prototype version of a computer controlled, permanent magnet and Hall- sensors equipped wire-rope tester, commercially to be designated as the Magnograph II.
