Perspective: Chapter 13
Abstract
The foregoing chapter reveals many historical issues relating to the impact of physical and virtual spaces on musical events. For me, the contemplation of such matters could not be more timely. Having worked at the Royal Albert Hall for 22 years, culminating in the position of inaugural Artistic Director, I have now moved to new pastures, recently starting at the Anschutz Entertainment Group (AEG), also as their first Artistic Director. AEG is known among other things for its ownership and management of venues, alongside the promotion of concerts. I have been recruited in this new position to expand their repertoire and broaden their horizons outside the world of rock and pop. In their own words, ‘orchestras and classical music scare them’. It is a whole new world for me, as it is for them. I am hopeful that I can influence them and others to think differently about classical music, and I intend to prove that it can be interwoven into everything we do. I am writing this at the Royal College of Music (RCM), where I studied in the late nineties, and I am here today because my 12-year-old daughter attends the Junior Department. There could be no better place or time to consider my thoughts on this topic. The preservation and presentation of classical and orchestral music are something I feel passionately about – but preservation doesn’t mean keeping it in a museum but rather finding new ways to protect it as we move forward.
