Finalist vie for super collider, without New York

Abstract

The final race for the super collider is on, but with a late scratch—New York. In the wake o f that state's failed attempt to substitute a site near the Canadian border for one that local residents opposed, on January 19, 1988, the Department of Energy (DOE) adopted as its own the short list of proposed locations for the Superconducting Super Collider submitted last fall by the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). Meanwhile, the possibility that the final selection may be made by Congress and not DOE looms in the distance.
