Morphology of Abortive Sporangia and "Sporangioids" in Microsporangiate Strobili of Selaginella umbrosa
Botanical Gazette1974Vol. 135(3), pp. 224–227
Abstract
Wholly microsporangiate strobili of Selaginella umbrosa also contain abortive sporangia and occasional vegetative outgrowths (sporangioids). Sporangioids are green, usually cylindrical structures ranging in length from 0.2 to 0.5 mm. Anatomically, sporangioids are differentiated into an outer "epidermis," which surrounds a chlorenchymatous "cortex." Lignified tracheary elements and/or procambial-like cells occupy the central region. Possible causal factors underlying sporangioid formation, as well as the possible morphological nature of sporangioids, are discussed.
