The Uptake of Methionine-S35 by the Chick Embryo and its Inhibition by Ethionine

Abstract
ABSTRACT The distribution of S35 in the proteins of the chick embryo was studied with labelled methionine. The various tissues were found to differ significantly from each other in their incorporated S35. Ethionine inhibited the uptake of methionine and higher dosages of ethionine retarded differentiation, and caused abnormalities. Methionine was shown to alleviate the effect of ethionine. Glycine did not. The specificity of the morphogenetic processes affected by ethionine, and the biochemical aspects of this inhibition, are briefly discussed.
