Abstract
Multiform tuber-like gemmae occur on the rhizoids of some populations of Weissia controversa from the central and southern United States but are seemingly lacking in other pop- ulations examined. The gemmae are present year-round and occur in colonies both with and without sporophytes, from sea level to 2,388 m. The growing awareness of and interest in rhizoid gemmae in mosses was summarized recently by Risse (1987), who reviewed the extensive literature and found that rhizoid gemmae had been reported for 82 taxa of European mosses and 36 taxa of extra- European mosses. Although rhizoid gemmae were mentioned as occurring in Weissia controversa by Reese (1984), they have never been described or illustrated, and W. controversa Hedw. was not among the mosses listed by Risse. This article describes and illustrates the rhizoid gemmae of W. contro- versa and documents their occurrence in specimens from six states in the central and southern United States.
